Argentina opened their World Cup campaign with victory over Nigeria in Group B, but the result should have been far greater than the 1-0 margin. Time and again Diego Maradona’s side could have wrapped up the game but were frustrated by an outstanding display by Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

It took just six minutes for Argentina to grab the lead through Gabriel Heinze, the left-back powering a header home on the penalty spot from Juan Veron’s corner. Moments earlier Enyeama had to tip behind a Lionel Messi curler after a misplaced pass from Chidi Odiah. Enyeama was much the busier goalkeeper in the first half, saving from Messi and Gonzalo Higuain. Twice he did well to tip away curling efforts from Messi, and in between he closed the angle well to deny Higuain after Tevez had slipped him through. Argentina could even have been ahead as early as the third minute but Higuain put the ball wide from just yards out after good work from Messi.
